2Hot4Ice Columbia, S.C. February 20-22, 2009

Two division title games on Feb. 22 at 2Hot4Ice’s regional qualifier in Columbia, S.C., required overtime to determine the champions. It doesn’t get any better than that, even at one of 2Hot4Ice’s always competitive events.

The 10U Boom Hockey and 16U Team Carolina squads were the overtime victors at Plex Indoor Sports. Along with all the other teams in the tournament, they earned a spot in 2Hot4Ice’s National Games, July 8-12. The series’ national championships will be held in Georgia for the first time, at the SGAA Dual Decks in Snellville, just outside of Atlanta.

When all was said and done, the 10U division title was settled in a best-of-three-games series between Boom Hockey and DSD Blue. The Blue won the opening game of the Columbia event for both teams 3-2. Boom Hockey prevailed 8-2 when the teams met again midway through the weekend. Then it was the Boomers 5-4 in the extra session in the division finale.

Boom Hockey was paced by three of the division’s four individual honorees: JJ Fecteau, points leader; Zach Pina, top dishman; and Jake Butler, top goalie. The Deebs Young Award, presented to each division’s unsung hero, went to Tyler Kromenhoek of the DSD Blue.

The 16U Team Carolina skaters rolled into their title game having won all three of their games, two of them by a combined 18-2 score. Then they faced the Tsunami Blue 14U team, which forced them into the extra session before falling 3-2.

Both Team Carolina and the Tsunami Blue earned two individual honors. Team Carolina’s Mike Delong and Joel Szabo were the points leader and top dishman, respectively. The Tsunami Blue’s Peter Green was named the top goalie and Jake Turco Kopitzke took home the Deebs Young Award.

12U division

The Charlotte Jr. Checkers won all four of their games to claim the division crown. Two of them came at the expense of the DSD Red 10U team, 4-2 in a preliminary round game and 5-2 in the championship game.

The Checkers were led by Brandon Nobrega and Rhys Davies, the division’s points leader and top goalie, respectively.  The DSD White’s Eric Beresid was the top dishman and the DSD Red’s Tyler Haddon was the Deebs Young Award recipient.

14U Gold division

The DSD Red stumbled just once in capturing the division title, a 4-3 loss to the Columbia Cobras in a preliminary round game. But the Red rebounded to stop the hometown team 6-3 in the finale, behind the division’s points leader John Straub.

The other division individual honors were parceled out to the DSD Whites’s Justin Schomburg, the top goalie, and the Cobras’ Chip Ellis, the Deebs Young honoree.

14U Silver division

The Jr. Checkers Red shook off losses in their first two games to stop the Sports Zone Wave 3-2 in the semifinals before erupting for a 7-0 thrashing of their sister team, the Jr. Checkers White, to take the division. The Wave’s Michi Oshima was the division’s top dishman.

18U/Adult division

Team Carolina became the third undefeated team in the Columbia regional qualifier when it downed the Hornets 4-2 for the second time in the division championship game. Team Carolina had opened the tournament with an 8-0 thumping of the Hornets, then stopped the Hooters of Rock Hill 6-3 and the All-American Climbers 6-1.
