2Hot4Ice Motors into Hockeytown March 13-15, 2009

2Hot4Ice’s sold-out annual foray to Michigan the weekend of March 13-15 produced multiple championships for two Detroit-area programs and added 30 teams to the number eligible to compete for a 2Hot4Ice national title. The multiple champions that emerged from the regional qualifier at the JCC Center in Detroit were Team Advanced Care and the Storm. Team Advanced Care took championships in the 14U Gold, 16U Gold and 18U divisions. The Storm prevailed in the 10U and 14U Silver divisions.

10U Division

The Storm was the first champion crowned on Sunday after it recorded its third shutout of the regional qualifier, a 7-0 pounding of RBK 98, which had tied the Storm, 3-3, in a preliminary round game.  For his outstanding play, the Storm’s Mike Hubbard was named the division’s top goalie. Teammate Joe Tabbi earned the Deebs Young Award, presented to the unsung hero in each division. The points leader and top dishman were the RBK 98’s Brandon Glasser and Cam Tomyn, respectively.

12U Division

RBK 97 Michigan won all four of its games, capping its run with 8-3 and 5-2 triumphs over the Mission Storm behind the division’s top dishman, Ryan Moran; its top goalie, Spencer Applebaum; and the Deebs Young Award recipient, Zack Malles. The other individual honor went to the Storm’s Mac Burkhard, who led all 12U skaters in points.

14U Gold Division

Team Advanced Care, which plays out of the Skate Zone in Rochester Hills, Mich., grabbed its first division title in Detroit with a 3-1 win over the Tour Excitement ’95. The triumph in the division championship game followed a 5-3 opening-game win over the Tour Excitement and 6-4 and 4-1 decisions over the Diablos Black and Detroit Mission Stars, respectively. Team Advanced Care players dominated the division’s individual awards. Nathan Renouf was the points leader, Stephan Beauvais the top dishman and Alex Silverson the top goalie. The Deebs Young Award was presented to the Tour Excitement’s Connor Kenrick.

14U Silver division

The Storm rebounded from a 5-3 opening-game loss to the RBK 95 Michigan squad to win its four games, including a 3-0 decision over the RBK 94 in the championship game. The Storm was paced by division individual honorees Ryan Guzek, the top goalie, and Dalton Czaicynski, the Deebs Young recipient. Jake Gammichia of RBK 96 Michigan and Logan Bennett of RBK 94 were the points leader and top dishman, respectively.

16U Gold division

Team Advanced Care joined the 12U RBK 97 Michigan and the 14U Gold Tour Excitement ’95 teams as the only undefeated and untied squads at the end of the Detroit qualifier when it beat the US Hawks, 4-1, in the division finale after outscoring its first three opponents 26-5. Division individual honors went to Advanced Care’s Keith Long, points leader; Nathan Renouf, top dishman; and Chris Kirk, top goalie. The Deebs Young honoree was Brandon Price of the US Hawks

16U Silver Division

After opening the qualifier with a tie and a loss, the Detroit Mission Stars 93 fought to a 2-1 semifinal victory over the Diablo Whites to set up a title showdown with the Patriots. Led by Deebs Young Award winner Ronnie Moomey, the Mission Stars fought off the stubborn Patriots to win, 3-2, in overtime. Patriots’ bladers took home the other three individual honors. Yanni Kefallinos was the points leader, Stephen Sage the top dishman and Jamie Daniels the top goalie.

18U Division

Team Advanced Care won two of three games from the Diablos, including a 5-1 decision in the division finale, en route to the program’s third championship in Detroit. Leading the way for Advanced Care was Corey Pfeiffer, who was presented with the Deebs Young Award. The Diablos swept the other three individual awards, with Kevin Moore honored as the points leader, T.J. Zagata as the top dishman and Zack Cetrone as the top goalie.

Next up for 2Hot4Ice competitors is the regional qualifier in Greenville, South Carolina March 27-29. As is the case at all 2Hot4Ice events, each team automatically qualifies for the series’ outstanding season-ending Showdown, 2009 Nationals.
